Losing hair is no fun and most Americans would love to have a full head of thick and healthy looking hair. In addition, most people do groom their hair on a daily basis which includes washing, conditioning and sometimes using the hair dryer. However, sometimes problems do arise when an individual does begin to lose his or her hair.
There can be a number of reasons as to why a person begins losing hair. First, as we age our hair may normally become thinner therefore we can expect to start losing hair. In addition, genetics can play a large part whether or not a person will begin losing hair or eventually become entirely bold. It was believed at one time that hair loss was a trait that males inherited from the mother’s side of the family. However, it is now believed that genetically related hair loss can be inherited from the father’s side of the family.
In addition to genetics, there are other reasons as to why a person may start losing their hair. If a person colors or straightens their hair, this can eventually dry out the hair follicles and cause breakage and split ends. In addition, stress can cause a person’s hair to fall out. If you feel that your stressful lifestyle may be causing hair loss it is best to consult with a qualified physician to make sure that it is not something more serious.
Certain medications can also cause hair loss. Some medications used to treat heart conditions can cause the thinning and eventual loss of hair. However, once the medication dose is modified or reduced the problem normally goes away. In addition, allergic reactions to certain soaps and shampoos could cause ones hair to fall out.
Thyroid conditions can cause hair loss. It is a fact that some people suffering with thyroid disorders such as tumors will lose some of their hair. Actually, hair loss is one of the main symptoms of a thyroid problem. Once the problem is properly diagnosed and treated the loss of hair should cease.
Whatever the reason for hair loss may be it is important to find the cause. If the hair loss is health related then there is a better chance that it is only temporary. However, if the hair loss is caused by a genetic trait then there is not much that can be done to prevent the hair from coming out.
The anesthesia used during surgery can cause temporary loss of hair for up to one year following surgery. However, normally within 12 months the hair will grow back almost to its original thickness.
Finally, if hair loss is permanent there are some treatment and solutions such as hair transplants, wigs and use of certain topical solutions. However, it has been shown that topical solutions for trying to grow hair have little to no real long term value. Therefore, some people may have to accept that losing hair is something that one must face some day.
